I started rereading the Aikido book Takemusu Aiki, which is a compilation of oral speeches by Aikido founder Ueshiba Morihei. The book was written by Takahashi Hideo, who was a member of the Byakko Shinko Kai, a religious/spiritual organization founded by Goi Masahisa that is credited with the spread of the peace prayer “May peace prevail on earth.” (There are poles with this prayer written in multiple languages staked into the ground and I remember seeing one near my childhood home in Minnesota)
最近は合気道の本として「武産合気」を読み直し始めた。この本は合気道開祖植芝盛平の口述を編集し、まとめたものです。著者は高橋英雄という白光真宏会の信者でした。白光真宏会の創始者は五井昌久で、平和の祈り「世界人類が平和でありますように」などで知られていると思います。(自分の故郷のミネソタ州でもその祈りが書かれたピースポールは確かにありました。)
Unlike many Aikido books of recent years, Takemusu Aiki can be very difficult to understand and, in my reading of it, does not focus on the application and how to of any specific technique done in regular practice. There are no pictures walking the reader through the parts of a technique.
近年の合気道の多くの本とは違って、「武産合気」の内容がとても難しくて、ほとんどの人はなかなか理解できないと思います。また、私の解釈では、技法の説明に一切も触れない、読者のために、技の注意点を解説される写真集もありません。
Though presented as a collection of speeches about Aikido and the workings of the universe as understood by Ueshiba Morihei, words alone are not able to fully convey what it was like to be there in person I believe. Throughout his speeches it is implied and noted that Ueshiba performs and demonstrates some vocalizations or techniques so the audience can get a sense of kotodama and the kokyuho (breath) of heaven and earth, etc.
植芝盛平が理解した合気道と宇宙の営みについての口述を文集として残されたとはいえ、文字だけては当時に現場で生で経験されたことを伝え切れないではないかと思います。口述なんですが、講演の間に植芝盛平は発声したり、演武したりすることもあったと注釈したところもあるので、観客の方が言霊や呼吸法などを生で見られて、文字で我々読者に伝え切れない経験ができましたではないかと思います。
As difficult as Takemusu Aiki is to understand, it has been translated in an abridged fashion into English and I expect other languages, though how faithful it is to the original language I do not know. I hope to touch on the English translation at a later time.
「武産合気」を理解するのも難しいですが、多少省略し簡潔版として英語に翻訳され、出版されたのも事実です。他の言語に翻訳されたか、どれぐらい原本に忠実に訳されたかはわかりません。将来いつか英語版の「武産合気」について話したいと思います。
