Fall 2021

It’s November and I am reminded how late the changing of the seasons and perhaps short fall can be in Japan.

Growing up in Minnesota, my memories of fall have always been leaves falling and the ground being a vibrant shade of red, yellow, orange, and brown. By Halloween a lot of leaves would’ve already covered the streets or been raked up and stuffed into garbage bags. Sometimes people even bought Jack o lantern patterned bags so they’d be a little more playful in keeping with the season.

The air would be crisp and a little chilly, perfect for going out for a run. The days would grow shorter but the colors of the street went beautifully with the afternoon sunset.

It’s more of a drab fall in Osaka. I would have to get out of the city and pretty much the residential areas to see any good amount of trees. The only place in the city I can think of that has a good amount of nature plus trees and plenty of open space would be Osaka Castle park, however it’s not the go to place for leave viewing.

Minoh in northern Osaka has probably one of the best views, but it’s a bit of a train ride and walk. I’ve been there to get a glimpse of the small falls, but it’s crowded and touristy, so depends on your tastes. Leaf viewing is like the fall counterpart to cherry blossom viewing if anything.

Thanks for reading and enjoy what remains of fall before winter sets in!
