Posture and Health No. 2

When Does Posture Start Affecting Our Health?

There’s probably no definitive answer as to when and how health problems arising from poor posture will appear in our lives. Everyone has different lifestyles and bodies, but posture can have consequences starting at a young age. Even if you feel fine while you’re young, I firmly believe

Just like any other lifestyle choice, how we choose (consciously or unconsciously) to sit, stand, move, etc. will add up and impact our overall health. And likewise, it can be very hard to address if you lack the conscious will to correct whatever you’re doing that’s bad for you.

Closely related to, or perhaps even inseparable from, exercise as a lifestyle choice, posture is something we have to be proactive about. To an extent, maintaining any posture involves activating certain muscles on top of being consciously aware of how your body is positioned. Exercise can help with posture and likewise posture can help with physical performance.

Posture and Mindset

Though not everyone may be aware of how their posture can affect how they feel not just physically, but mentally, I believe that the difference can be felt if people just give it a try. Sometimes people aren’t even aware they have bad posture unless someone points it out for them.

If you have a habit of looking downwards for so long that you don’t even know when you started doing so, chances are you probably won’t even feel its influence on your posture and maybe even your outlook on life.

People who exercise, by going to the gym to lift weights or people who go out for a run, for an example, do so with their head up and eyes forward. Good posture is the rule of thumb when exercising or engaging in any physical activity or labor.

For example, you can’t run with your eyes down or else you can’t see where you’re going. Additionally, looking down shifts the weight of forward, making it much more likely for you to fall forward and tumble if you slip.

When lifting weights, poor posture will increase the risk of injury and straining parts of the body that aren’t being used properly. Posture is especially important in regards to muscle activation for people looking to build and train certain parts of the body.

In short, posture affects not only health when we’re sitting still, but is also a factor when it comes to injury prevention when we’re active as well.
