Physical Tolls

Day 93 of writing every day.

Taking care of your body is key to staying alive and feeling good instead of miserable. This means finding the right lifestyle that has the ideal mix of food, exercise, sleep, and so on. However, it seems the right to such a balance seems to be denied to people more and more.

What do I mean? Food in terms of calories is more abundant than ever in the present but so much of it is empty calories full of hidden sugars and additives that pose potential risks not fully understood. Preservatives, food coloring, artificial flavors, etc. line row and row of fine print when you look at the back of food and drink packaging. How much of what’s inside the food and drink we ingest every day do we really understand? Why are some ingredients even added in the first place?

So much of society is disconnected from where food is grown and ignorant of all the processing that is involved to turn farm produce and catches into the ready-made food we buy from the grocery store. For example, so many people love to eat meat but have no idea how animals are raised, how they’re taken apart at the slaughterhouse, and prepared into cuts by butchers. But cooked meat doesn’t have much flavor so it’s the seasoning and sauce that makes it an enjoyable dining experience, and so much more unknowns are hidden within, but few bother to question anything as long as it tastes good.

It’s why I think “addictive free” is a label that attracts some people, and something many sellers want to put on their products, often to hop on the bandwagon to try and bait customers that don’t read the disclaimers behind their claims.

I’ve been hearing that colon cancer is being diagnosed with people at younger ages than before and my suspicion is that the heavily processed food we’re being offered has something to do with it.

This is where time comes in. Less and less people seem to be able to cook their own food compared to when people had to be more self-reliant and people didn’t eat out as much or there weren’t as many offerings of readymade food that just needed to be heated.

So many of us are forced to endure busy lives that we don’t have time to cook and enjoy meals at home with friends and family. You gotta spend money and eat out, and post pictures on social media about how amazing the food looks and tastes. Food is prepared by someone else and you don’t know what goes in and what’s good or bad.

Sharing meals together has been an important part of human bonding and is practiced by animals that live in social groups. But readymade meals to “save time” so we can be busy doing other things like staring at screens more.

I personally want to get more exercise and be more active throughout the day rather than make physical activity a thing to set aside time for. Why can’t strolls out in the park be part of the work day or afternoon naps an option as long as we get the work done by a given schedule? I’d say because those setting schedules are concerned with profit and actually aren’t thinking about living the good life.

The thought might run into a long rant no one has time for so I’ll end here.

Thanks for reading!
