Day 110 of writing every day.
I left my job today as the contract expired and couldn’t be more glad to move on. My former coworkers were quite supportive and I really didn’t have anything to do for the four hours I was in the office. My own resignation email notice was preceded by others, so quitting was just another incident in an ongoing series of events. But if anyone bothered reading it, I did include a piece of my mind rather than just leave with a template goodbye message.
Leaving a full-time job also means losing health insurance if the employer isn’t a shady one. Fortunately Japan’s healthcare system is a lot less complicated than the US’s. I just went to city hall to apply for national health insurance and it took literally minutes to get done once I verified my identity with an ID card and they confirmed with a call to my now former employer that I left my job today.
It’s starting to feel like I’m really beginning the next phase of my professional life. I still haven’t obtained permanent residency yet, but even if the application doesn’t go through this time, I’m still better off leaving the job than staying. Unlike the last time I went job hunting, I’m not feeling desperate. I have a set of skills I want to learn and a specific field I want to work in. Things are bound to work out I think.
Thanks for reading!
