Broken Fridge

Day 138 of writing every day.

I was wondering what the little creaks I’d been hearing last night were before I fell asleep last night. I didn’t have the stove on and the faucet wasn’t dripping water, so the source of the occasional noise was a mystery to me. If anything bothered me, it’d be the meowing of feral cats that seems to be rebounding in population in my town. Recently, a couple that roam the night streets like it’s their territory get into a meowing contest when they run into each other like they have to prove who’s the boss cat.

The fridge was already in my room when I moved in over ten years ago and is older than that. It’s not much, just a mini fridge like you’d find in a hotel room, but sits under the kitchen unit consisting of one built-in hotplate and a sink with a kitchen fan above. While it could make ice, it wasn’t powerful enough to keep frozen foods frozen solid, but only at a state of barely frozen and not thawing out.

I recall learning of its limits when I tried to store a small container of ice cream to find a puddle of what was supposed to be solid ice cream when I took it out the next day during my first year of living in Japan. I’m sure there are more powerful and energy efficient refrigerators available that I can get to replace it. So I welcome this opportunity even though it meant some perishable foods had to be unexpectedly thrown away.

I wonder what I’ll do next. First I’ll have to talk to my landlord about the fridge and its disposal. Maybe there’ll be a trip to a recycle shop to find a used fridge. I see possibilities for change in my daily habits as a result of this. After all, what food I’m able to store at home and how much space it can hold has the potential to impact my dietary habits. I could opt to reorganize my room to fit a larger fridge instead of getting a small similar sized fridge. The space below the sink could be used to store other things instead.
