Learning Laravel

Day 143 of writing every day.

After spending a couple weeks learning/reviewing JavaScript, working with PHP, and getting the local environment set up, I’m going to be studying Laravel.

The lessons I’ve had so far (three in total) kinda nudged me towards this framework as it seemed to be what the instructor uses for his day job and for what I had in mind to build as an app, it seemed to be best done using Laravel.

My original idea was to go frontend and learn React, but where the jobs are and what language I think I should learn doesn’t necessarily match up. I think I’ll be fine though, as Laravel seems to be the most commonly used PHP framework presently and can quickly build up what took a lot of typing in PHP in a short amount of time.

The instructor kind of skipped ahead of lecturing about PHP and focused on spending time giving me instructions to set up Laravel, which I guess was an okay use of time, but when I reached the Laravel section in the textbook, I found the first sections were dedicated to setting things up. It felt like I could have done through the steps myself, but I guess learning to do something on the spot while following instructions can be a worthwhile experience in and of itself.

I just hope that the coming lessons will be better led, but then learning to code is something you can only teach yourself. The mentor and extras are just there for support for the most part. So I just have to keep pushing on. The lesson yesterday involved setting up Laravel to work with bootstrap and it quickly set up a functional looking web app page. I’ll find out more about what kind of things it can also do when I advance through the textbook.

Thanks for reading!
