Suiting Up

Day 155 of writing every day.

Today, I put on my suit for the first time in at least a few months. I’ve written about having to attach a photo of yourself on resumes in Japan some time ago. I had a picture taken around that time but neglected to put on a suit and tie, so I retook one today with them on, making it a “suitable” picture for any time of application, including job resumes, provided the size matches the dimensions. Passports and visas apparently require different dimensions but I don’t see myself as needing to apply for those any time soon in the future.

Dress shirts aren’t really my thing and I find binding your neck with buttons and a necktie to be uncomfortable if the shirt is even the slightest bit too tight for my frame. Just getting that final button in place is an unnecessary hassle. Although it’s not something I want to wear on a daily basis, I guess I do appreciate how I feel like I look good when wearing one. But perhaps that’s because my clothes are casual without any sense of being fashionable.

I don’t think anyone wears a suit just for the sake of it in Japan. It’s going to almost always be for work rather than fashion, unless one wants to have a suave look for a date or something and the person they’re meeting up with is dressed up nicely. For me, today just felt like I had a purpose that was more than just studying since putting on a suit meant I was going to do something. I felt even at attention in a suit while in the photo booth than in a polo.

Well, I’ll be starting to apply for jobs soon, but also sign up for unemployment benefits soon too.

Thanks for reading!
