Job Hunt Anxiety

Day 162 of writing every day.

Now that I’m thinking about it, May has been moving along pretty fast and it’s nearly the end of the month already. I have until the end of June to find a job but getting a job is more than just applying for it.

I updated my resume as recently as April, and not much has changed except that now I have some experience learning PHP and Laravel. That means there’s not that much I need to do in order to apply for a job. However, once I apply for a job and submit my resume, it could be a few days before I get a response for an interview or a rejection. If I get an interview it could take a few days or even a couple weeks to get the next response depending on how many candidates they’re going over and if there will be an additional interview plus some kind of test.

All in all, I should expect the time needed to find a new job to take at least a month, which is a gamble. I won’t get kicked out of Japan if I don’t find one, to my knowledge, but it could jeopardize my residency application and I will have to check if I can switch to a job hunting visa if possible. There’s no need to fret, but I’m not secure like a citizen as being in Japan remains a privilege I have to secure constantly.

Fortunately, there seems to be job openings all year round I can fill. Unfortunately, they’re not very appealing. I have things I want to do in life here in Japan that I predict will be inhibited by a lot of the available positions simply because of the work hours, type of work, and average amount of overtime they list. There’s no way I would consider 20 to 30 hours of overtime a month to be worth an additional $500. Let me have time. You can’t buy an extra hour of the day with money even if you’re a billionaire. Everyone gets 24 hours.

Anyways, rather than worry, I’ll just keep myself open to recruiters to see what’s available and also browse job postings myself to get a grasp of the current job market. There’s no need to panic as panicking does nothing to help with my situation. Stay calm and keep looking, then apply when something looks like a good fit.
