Day 168 of writing every day.
It’s the end of May and summer is just around the corner. Much of Japan is known for hot and humid summers exacerbated by the concrete and asphalt that makes up the urban landscape. Summer homes are a luxury only the richest can afford and the initiatives to conserve energy have many places put air conditioners on hold until later.
It’s certainly hard to fall asleep at night when it’s hot and humid. You might keep a window open and hope the screen keeps the mosquitoes out. Sometimes it’s bad enough that it makes little to no difference at all even at night whether you’re letting the outside air in. If you attempt to brave the night without a fan at least, you might end up waking half way to dawn because you’re drenched in sweat.
It hasn’t gotten to those levels yet, but practice today has been as sweaty as the intense practices I had in Tokyo over the weekend. Things were pretty nice and cool and I hardly needed to wipe any sweat off me. Midway through tonight’s practice my towel was already feeling pretty damp. Being covered in sweat makes grabbing a slippery ordeal and I don’t think anyone really enjoys having someone’s sweat rub off on them, much less their own.
It’s going to be like this for the next several months but maybe I’ll shed a few pounds as well and not just in water weight.
