Silence Is Golden

Day 172 of writing every day.

As part of experimenting with the pomodero method and cutting out the music that many find to be engaging, I found myself to be more focused today when studying.

The thing about having background noise is that it adds an extra distraction when I want to be settled and focused. If I had to give an example, it’d be how some people need to listen to music while they workout. I find having earphones to be distracting and uncomfortable if I’m working out. I don’t think the thought has occurred to many people, but Japanese Budo is practiced without any music in the background as often seems to be the case with gyms.

You don’t need to get hyped up to work out when you’re just engaging in training that demands high levels of focus that is internally driven, not elicited by outside factors such as music or cheering. Some forms of guided meditation involve music and a lot of talk, but I find silence to be a luxury we all forget about in the digital age where everything has to be bright and exciting.

Bathe in silence, it can do you some good and free up a distracted brain from further distractions.
