Double Check Your PDFs

Day 178 of writing every day.

Working online, sharing files, and converting files are much easier in the present given the prominence of Google and Microsoft applications. Someone can share a Google doc with you and you can download it as a docx file that gets opened by Word by default or directly as a PDF. There’s not as much flexibility when working with excel files and sheets as they probably are fundamentally different from docx type files, even if they all can be directly converted to PDF format.

Not everything converts perfectly either when it comes to design. The text and data might transfer without issue when converting from Google docs to Word files, or Google sheets to excel files, but the design aspects such as margins, font, and dimensions might not be the same as default. This could mean the layout of the page isn’t the same even though it was perfect before conversion.

Usually PDFs keep things in place, but I wasn’t as careful as I needed to be when I downloaded my resume made on Google sheets and had it converted to excel before converting it to PDF. It ended up having some text get clipped off by the different default styling designs and I didn’t catch it until after I reviewed it after the fact that I submitted it in some job applications on Indeed. I’m not quite too familiar with Indeed either, so I should have been extra diligent in checking my attached file before clicking submit. I just hope my mistake hasn’t jeopardized my chances of getting even just an interview.

But looking on the bright side, I was told human resources don’t even bother looking in detail, so if they did reject me it could mean they really did look with attention to details instead of a brief scan. Additionally some may reject me because I’m without industry experience AND a foreigner instead of one or the other. Foreigners with experience as engineers in the tech industry seem to find work relatively easy. I’ll keep my spirits up and getting depressed about a mistake won’t fix anything.
