Day 186 of writing every day.
The interviews with two different companies over the past two days have all been done online. It’s something that makes job hunting more convenient I think, as it cuts the time and money used to commute to a place of business, and you can do it from the comfort of your own room, or whatever space is suitable/appropriate for a meeting that could run an hour long.
I find that in-person interviews can still be quite valuable even with the costs. When considering a job, it’s usually someplace you can commute to, but it’s not necessarily in an area you actually frequent, much less go to at all as you don’t have any business there or know of anything there in particular that interested you before. Going to an interview means scoping out the location either online or on foot so you can get there without issue and be on time for the interview.
Being there in-person might also give you a better feel of the office, or at least the people working there. So many tech jobs are dispatch services in Japan that employees rarely go to their employer’s office, but directly to and from the client or project they’ve been assigned to.
After the interview, I felt pretty exhausted as well, as an interview is an interview regardless of whether it’s in-person or online. I felt like I was being grilled and the company does set a high standard for skills/knowledge even when openly accepting applications from people with no previous experience. It’s the first time of the job interviews so far that I got asked to share my output in order to be seriously considered for the job despite everything else they asked me to assess my character and potential.
Well, I guess there’s nothing to do but try and brush up my portfolio on my own instead of waiting for my weekly lessons to progress enough for it to be considered complete as I wait on my instructor to help me add different functions and pages to it. Despite sounding like a nice place to work at, my impression is that it might not be as laid back as I initially thought. Maybe the manager was just doing his job, but I really need to weigh all the merits and demerits of the jobs should I pass the first round and move on to the second round.
