Confronting Gaming Addiction

Day 188 of writing every day.

Games provide an escape from reality and are more widely available than ever. Designs and formulas are pretty much standardized so that pretty much anyone can easily find games of a genre they like and start playing if they have a device connected to the internet.

While it’s safe to say that games are entertaining, it can also be addicting and if given the option to play for hours, the craving to do so can be hard to resist. I know I should be spending more hours studying instead of on games as games won’t help me secure a job no matter how many hours I spend trying to get everything done. If I put all those playtime hours into studying, I could potentially have accomplished a lot more output from my study.

The urge to game because of how easy it is compared to real life tasks and the amount of rewards you receive from doing well in game exaggerates the positive reinforcement people never give you enough of in real life. It’s sad but I think part of why games become an escape even for working people with otherwise seemingly successful lives.

No use crying over the past, I need to take responsibility by making real changes. So I’ll say it here that I’m cutting back on gaming time for real. No jokes.
