Refreshingly Honest

Day 210 of writing every day.

I had the second interview with a company I applied to for a job today. It’s an entry level job for people looking to become programmers and engineers where the company basically finds projects to assign employees to that are short staffed. In all honesty, the starting pay is disappointing and there’s even a reduction to 60% of pay if on standby.

The system is pretty practical from a business perspective though. Why pay full price for employees who aren’t bringing any money in? These businesses operate by contracting out their programmers and engineers to projects, and without anything going on in house quite yet, standby just means time to study and hone the skills with the languages you need to increase the chances of some project leader deciding to take you in when the company’s salesperson makes a pitch for you.

If I was just looking at pay, I wouldn’t consider it, but if it’s where I can get my foot in the door to new opportunities that come with raises that far exceed the bare minimum I’ve been legally required to receive, then my expectations are it will pay off. The company was pretty clear that they’re supportive of people who decide to move on if they’re going to be professional about it instead of abrupt. If anything, they want people who want to stay and those who want to leave do so without any guilt tripping. At least that’s my impression after meeting in person.

Running a business isn’t easy nor is it cheap. It’s always filled with risks and only the largest and most profitable of companies really have more money to spend than they know what to do with it. I’m glad I got to meet them in person. I don’t know if they’re the number one choice, but they seemed quite understanding that I was still waiting to hear back from other companies as well and were willing to give me time if they decide to offer me a job so that I can decide after having different choices presented to me. After all, why hire someone who’s thinking about the what-ifs of if they had waited a little longer to make a choice? It’s best to let someone choose that they really want to work for you out of all the options they have.
