Day 228 of writing every day.
With the Earth’s surface temperature getting hotter and hotter, and the ocean’s ability to absorb the heat increase attributed to man-made climate change, I can’t help but wonder if my career priorities are right. Maybe I should be focusing on survivalist skills and outdoorsmanship to increase my odds of surviving.
For example, food supplies are going to take a drastic hit if temperatures continue to climb and also cause weather patterns that disasters for farmers in the event of too much rain or shifting temperatures outside of their usual range such as winter becoming mild enough for certain pests (especially invasive ones) to thrive. Oceans are already being overfished and warming oceans might cause fish to relocate or drop in numbers as their environment becomes more difficult to survive and reproduce successfully at the same rate compared to decades ago.
I’m guessing whatever happens, the people who manage to establish some degree of self-sufficient lifestyle in the form of growing their own food and being able to build and fix their own homes and tools will be the most secure. Especially if they’ve planned with means to defend themselves should shit really hit the fan.
Money is only good as long as people trust in it. If people don’t believe money can be exchanged for goods and services anymore because of an irreversible breakdown in the system society operates under, then it’s going to be a return to bartering or taking things by force or theft. I mean does anyone care how much money is left if there’s only enough food to feed a fraction of the population?
If there’s not enough food to go around, the rich might attempt to buy out all the food, but if the food growers aren’t willing to part with it because money isn’t a substitute for food. You’re not gonna get calories and nutrients from money, so there’d be no point holding on to it. But if the rich don’t get what they want, they’ll take it by force and offer to pay whatever fools are willing to do the dirty work for a cut of the luxuries the rich have.
Of course, the working poor who have nothing to begin with and nothing to lose will also team up to do whatever they can to secure food for themselves. Only those who don’t wish to live on would choose to do nothing and starve if the world goes up in flames.
Things aren’t looking that bleak yet, but I can’t help but wonder if I’ll be denied the luxury of living well into old age and living comfortably with the thought that society will continue to be stable and peaceful. If anything, I feel like things will keep deteriorating for the majority of people as time goes on, and when I’m an old man, it’s when things will be on the brink of unthinkable destruction and mass extinction.
Unfortunately, as of now I’m so dependent on society right now that I can’t even troubleshoot an issue with my washing machine. I’ve read the manual and checked the pages on problems, but it’s beyond just cleaning out the filter now and probably will need disassembling the machine to check out a part inside that’s not accessible without the proper tools.
With things designed to break nowadays to maximize corporate profits, and repairs also priced to profit companies instead of just breaking even for the cost of labor and parts, it’s actually more sensible to buy a new washing machine than to ask a handyman to come and fix it. A new machine might run longer before breaking down than a repaired older machine, and the time it takes to deliver an order might be quicker than being able to find a handyman with an open schedule that can accommodate your own schedule.
