AI’s Impact Overblown?

Day 253 of writing every day.

If there’s anything people need to be wary of, it is the nature of the media to hype and exaggerate things. The intentional fanning of the flames with eye-catching headlines and titles may be a strategic choice to get potential customers to buy a publication in the form of newspapers and magazines but in the digital age, it’s just passed off as “clickbait.”

Recent advances in AI technology focus on topics such as chat-GPT, AI generated “art,” and likenesses of people being used most noticeably in “deep fakes.” The AI powered tools have been celebrated by some who see them as tools that might cause a giant leap forward in productivity and possibilities. On the other hand, they’re countered by protests from people who fear mass layoffs, AI growing too smart and independent that it’ll one day take over the world, and at a private level, that people’s likenesses could be digitalized for monetization or other sinister purposes even after their death.

Who really controls AI though? AI’s intelligence is powered by information made accessible through its connection to the internet, which depending on how it’s trained, can make it smart or stupid depending on what kind of sources of information it gets fed. I’m guessing even if AI improves enough to make a significant difference in the need for certain types of labor, it’s going to come at a high premium when the people behind its development find themselves acting at the behest of greedy rich people that want an even larger share of all the wealth on the planet.

AI might be able to do things you ask it to do to an incredibly accurate level for certain tasks but it’s not going to replace humans as it’s built on imitating what the human mind with a body capable of performing actions is capable of. The trouble caused by lack of work for all the people who get laid off in a dystopian future where AI technology replaces much of the workforce wouldn’t be in the best interest of any government nor the masses. So I think most people are safe and once the sensationalized feelings about AI have passed, people will start returning to their everyday worries like being called back to the office.
