Day 280 of writing every day.
While StarCraft is a classic, the game mechanics that still annoy me are how units are managed and mapped. Compared to more modern games, the ease of play is quite dated.
One example is when selecting and grouping units, you are allowed a max of 12 units selected and grouping them with a shortcut key is Ctrl + 1 through 0. This is alright if you’re building a limited amount of units that take up a big chunk of max unit production allotments. But if you’re mass producing low tier units then you’re out of luck and might be running out of shortcut keys that are most within reach from your left hand. If the game is going to play fast, you’ll need to optimize your slots so they’re quickly accessible, and having more than 5 or 6 makes micromanaging a challenge when you have to swap back and forth to give them directions and activate skills.
Another is the mapping and collision settings of units. Utilizing strategies such as taking advantage of the terrain to create a bottleneck that allows ranged units to wipe out enemy targets because the path is narrow is one thing. But units not knowing how to walk the shortest path to the targeted destination and bumping into each other that sets them running a wide circle is frustrating. Unit sizes can affect whether they can squeeze through a space between buildings, but sometimes it’s as if they want to be stuck.
Anyways, I’ve been playing the campaign missions and finished the original story missions yesterday. I’m guessing I’d need another full day or two to finish the remaining missions but I’m not going to be spending that much time in a day as I got work and study to do.
Thanks for reading!
