Fall Equinox 2023

Day 285 of writing every day.

Today is the Fall Equinox of 2023, when daylight and night time are said to be equally long. From this day on until winter solstice the days will grow shorter as autumn turns to winter as a result of the Earth’s axle tilt. At least for those of us in the northern hemisphere. The southern hemisphere is going in the opposite direction towards spring and summer.

In Japan the Fall Equinox is a national holiday, but this year it falls on a Saturday. That means the holiday has essentially canceled. Canceled in the sense that Japan, despite adopting Saturday and Sunday as weekends off in many workplaces, chooses only to substitute a weekday for a holiday if it falls on Sunday. Instead of a long weekend—as is the case when a holiday falls on a Sunday—you get a standard two-day weekend if the holiday falls on Saturday.

Well, I’m glad to be going in to do some actual work soon, but I’m pretty sure there are a lot of people disappointed about the loss of a September holiday.

Thanks for reading!
