Day 331 of writing every day.
Today was day 3 of the kitting assignment and I’d say I’m finally getting a feel for all the steps to finish assembling each unit. It’s not the work I’m looking to do as I want to work in IT doing programming and other computer related work, so standing on my feet all day assembling things with no skill requirement beyond being good with your hands and able to pay some attention to detail.
The good thing is that the day goes back pretty quickly. It takes close to thirty minutes if fast, and more if slower, to assemble a unit. There are checks to go through every time and it requires constant vigilance but no eye straining focus. That means time goes by pretty fast as completing a few units means it’s morning break, then it’s lunch break, then it’s evening wrap up for the day with cleaning and sorting.
The bad thing is I find my legs and feet quite tired by the end of the work day, and I’m repeating the same movements in set postures that I’m sure will cause some imbalance in stance and body usage. For example, I’m leaning over slightly and looking down when I tie up wires and put or take out screws. I’m using my right hand mainly to do work of unwinding bands as well or slapping on stickers.
It’s hard to imagine myself spending four good months doing this sort of menial labor intensive work instead of something more “skilled” and programming related. I say my boss really owes me one if I stick around to the end of the contract as this type of warehouse job should not be tossed around to people seeking to enter the tech industry. I’m spending precious time building experience in something that’s not transferable to programming in a visible way and at best it might get other job references from the same sales person.
Thanks for checking in!
