“The Purge”: A Reality Waiting To Happen?

Day 83 of writing every day.

I recently finished watching the movie called “The Purge” along with its sequels focused on different characters. It’s set in a fictional America where once a year, all crime is allowed and people are free to riot, steal, and murder anyone they want for 12 hours from night to dawn. Everything was set up by a fictional political entity called The New Founding Fathers of America, frequently referred to as the NFFA.

I don’t really feel the optimism that things are going to get better with time like I did as a kid. We all might hear occasional news about “progress” being made in regards to treatment and acceptance of LGBTQ people, racial and gender income inequalities being reduced, etc. But the truth is that wealth disparities between the ultra rich 0.1% of people—who hold more wealth than half the population of humans on earth combined—and everyone else keeps growing wider.

Violent crime might be down in some instances but people are still being victimized by others who want a slightly bigger slice of the pie. Rather than work wages for it, they take it from others instead forcefully or through fraud.

In the US it seems that mass shootings are the norm now and while not expected on a daily basis for most people, it’s a possibility that weighs on people’s minds all the time when shocking tragedies have led to public schools holding drills for protecting against armed intruders.

Before going to bed, I think that the legal barriers to making something like “The Purge” a reality would be next impossible. But the idea of population control in some form to benefit the wealthy is definitely believable. So rather than a loud and festive purge, it’d be more policy based that would make it impossible for most below certain income levels to thrive.
