Checking In With The Unemployment Office

Day 240 of writing every day.

With work scheduled to start in less than two weeks, I’ll need to get ready to go through the process of reporting in as being no longer unemployed. Hello Work, Japan’s unemployment office, had already scheduled a set check-in date ahead of time back when I visited them in June. So I went in this morning since today was the date they set for me.

If things go without issue, I’m set to receive a little under 90,000 yen for the unemployment benefits I’m eligible to receive. It’s not much, but it still amounts to a significant figure for someone who’s making too little to have any savings for the time being. I still need to send a document to my employer for them to fill out and return to me, which I’ll then submit to Hello Work for my final visit the day before I start working.

Unfortunately, the timing of everything has Japan’s obon summer break right in the middle on top of a long weekend starting this Friday, so it’s looking a little iffy in regards to if I can get the document returned to me in time for the walk-in submission next week Friday. Japan Post doesn’t do one-day delivery services so if I send it out today, it’s not going to arrive at the company until Friday with the express mail, and if everyone is off until Wednesday, the expectation would be that I wouldn’t get it back until Friday morning or early afternoon, the day of which I’m being asked to show up for the final visit.

I’m not going to worry about it. If it turns out that I don’t get it back in time, I’ll call Hello Work and tell them I’d like to reschedule the day and check with work if I can take time to go submit it. I’m still going to be on standby for all I know at the present, so there shouldn’t be any issues.

I’ll have to go to city hall as well to take myself off national health insurance since I’ll be forced to switch to the insurance provider that my company is on from the date my employment begins. The process will also switch me back to nenkin social security payments being deducted out of paychecks instead of my paying them out of pocket through payment slips.
