Writing A Book on Japan Life

Hey everyone! Long time no read!

I’m back to announce that I’m currently writing a book about my life in Japan. Having been in Japan for over ten years and actually going onto year twelve, there’s a lot of I have to unpack. I’ll be honest, life in Japan hasn’t been easy and I’m not going to make it out to be exotic or glamorous like influencers tend to do. It’s not going to be some crime story like Jake Adelstein’s Tokyo Vice focused on the intrigues privy to journalists.

My book is going to be from the perspective of the common man, and instead of taking place in Tokyo which gets a disproportionate amount of attention, it will center around my life in Osaka, another major city that is much smaller in size but perhaps just as vibrant as Tokyo.

Why the common man theme? Well Japan’s been stagnating economically for decades with no real increases in wages despite all the inflation and increased cost of living. Everything else seems to have changed in comparison, and while many people from the outside tend to have this view that Japan is resistant to change, I have witnessed first-hand change constantly taking place over the decade I’ve spent my life in Japan.

It’s not easy writing a book and I find my thoughts frequently scattered as I try to decide what to write and which points of my life to focus on. Often I’m jumping from one event to another depending on my mood when writing, and sometimes typing becomes a hassle, so I take a speech to text approach, which does potentially save time and effort.

I’m not sure how often I’ll write new posts but please drop in from time to time!
